What it is

Unitree R1 is Unitree Robotics' third humanoid robot, released on July 25, 2025. Positioned as a lightweight small-to-medium bipedal humanoid, it champions the idea of "move first, work later." The robot stands about 121 cm tall and weighs about 25 kg, with 24 degrees of freedom in the base version (6 per leg, 5 per arm, 2 in the waist) and 24–40 DOF in the EDU version; it uses low-inertia high-speed inner-rotor permanent magnet synchronous motors, has an arm payload of about 2 kg, and can perform high-dynamic moves such as running, flips, handstand walking, and spinning side kicks.

Priced from CNY 39,900, the R1 made it one of the most cost-effective bipedal humanoid robots on the market at the time, and it is regarded as a landmark product driving the "democratization of humanoid robots"; it was also named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2025. The R1 integrates multimodal voice and image large models, supporting speech recognition and visual interaction; the base version carries an 8-core high-performance CPU, while the EDU version can be fitted with NVIDIA Jetson Orin (40–100 TOPS) high-compute modules. All joint and sensor interfaces are fully open, supporting secondary development and mainstream simulation platforms.

In June 2026, Unitree lowered the R1's official starting price to CNY 29,900 and began off-the-shelf sales. In April 2026, Unitree also launched the R1-A5/A7 series of dual-arm humanoid robots based on the R1 platform (fixed base/mobile base), aimed at industrial assembly and research and education.
