Kaleido is a humanoid robot research platform unveiled by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 2017, standing 178 cm tall, weighing 85 kg, and with 32 degrees of freedom across its body. As a long-established Japanese heavy-industry and industrial-robot manufacturer, Kawasaki positioned Kaleido as an exploration of future manufacturing, civil engineering and heavy-labor scenarios, focusing on validating hydraulic actuation and whole-body control for large bipedal robots.
Kaleido was unveiled at the 2017 International Robot Exhibition (iREX) in Tokyo, and its design is directly descended from Kawasaki's technology in hydraulic excavators and other construction machinery. Kawasaki has worked with Japanese universities and research institutes on its gait and whole-body control research, and has shown concepts of Kaleido working alongside forklifts and construction equipment.
Since the 2020s Kawasaki has gradually shifted its focus to industrial products such as collaborative robots. Kaleido continues to appear in public demonstrations and academic exchanges as an interim research platform, and remains one of the representative cases of corporate humanoid robot R&D in Japan.
