What it is

Figure 01 is Figure AI's first-generation humanoid robot. The company was founded in 2022, announced the project in March 2023 and closed a US$70 million Series A (including an investment from Intel); it achieved dynamic walking for the first time in May 2023 and released its first real walking video on October 17, 2023 (previously there were only renders). The robot stands about 1.68 m tall, weighs 60 kg, has a maximum payload of 20 kg, moves at 1.2 m/s, runs for about 5 hours, has about 41 degrees of freedom across the body, and uses all-electric actuators with dynamic bipedal walking (a bent-knee gait).

In January 2024, Figure and the BMW Group announced a partnership, with Figure 01 entering BMW's Spartanburg plant for testing. In February 2024 the company closed a US$675 million Series B (at a US$2.6 billion valuation, with investors including Bezos, Microsoft, NVIDIA, the OpenAI Startup Fund, Intel and Amazon) and announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. On March 13, 2024 it released a demo integrated with OpenAI's large models — the robot could hold real-time voice conversations and understand and execute natural-language instructions, earning it the title of "the world's first ChatGPT humanoid robot".

Figure 01 was positioned for logistics, warehousing and manufacturing scenarios (such as cargo handling and coffee-making demos), and was superseded by the second-generation Figure 02 in August 2024.
