What it is

Romeo was Aldebaran Robotics' French humanoid project for elderly and dependent-person assistance, initiated in 2009 with INRIA, ISIR and LAAS-CNRS as partners. The 1.4 m, 40 kg robot used 37 degrees of freedom, a four-vertebra backbone, articulated feet and four-fingered hands, with two eyebrow cameras and four onboard computers handling vision, hearing, motion and AI. A first prototype was presented in February 2012 and several European laboratories received units, but Romeo was never commercialised and the programme ended after Aldebaran's 2015 acquisition by SoftBank.
